GET TO KNOW ME...

From the Schoolhouse to the Statehouse!
Hi, I’m Crystal Dillard, and I’m on a journey to be YOUR State Representative for District 131.
I’ve been a Texas educator for more than15-years. I’m also a homeowner, a daughter, sister, an aunt, a proud product of Houston Schools, and an honored graduate of Texas Woman’s University. And in 2022, I’m starting my journey from the SCHOOLHOUSE to the STATEHOUSE!
As a lifelong learner and classroom teacher by profession, I have had the unique opportunity to find myself an accidental expert in the art of survival, in a year like none other in recent history. As a middle school teacher, who knew I would have to suit up daily, in face shield, mask, and gloves, and position myself behind a plexiglass partition to deliver U.S. History lessons to students whose concerns were much more in step with figuring our how they were going to maneuver basic survival, than learning about the founding fathers! Trying times would be an understatement.
Our community, city, state, and country has undergone a tremendous metamorphosis in recent years. We’ve come together to meet urgent challenges, but moreover, we’ve faced some realizations of circumstance that have left us polarized in many ways as Americans. And for as much as we’ve gained throughout our short history as a nation. We can probably all agree that there is definitely room to grow in terms of ensuring life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all. I believe I was born for a time and responsibility such as this, and I need your support in helping lead the way to making this community a model for diverse and prospering communities across America. We can do this District 131. We can do this Harris County. We can do this Texas!
As your representative I will do my best to champion your most pressing concerns to Texas leadership and fight tirelessly to see that your interests are considered when decisions for District 131 are made. But moreover, I will go to battle at the grassroots level with you to devise workable plans to address issues in our own communities and find feasible solutions to problems that have been generational barriers to our progress.
Our district is a wonderful distribution of cultures, age groups, and diverse socio-economic sectors. A real microcosm of America today. When we pool our resources, ideas, and aspirations, we can truly become a shining example of what 21st century American society can be. But this is only attainable if we work together, in unison.
I have had the opportunity to share meaningful dialogue with many groups and individuals in our district, and not surprisingly the most pressing concerns are echoed throughout every conversation. Improving community-police relations, safe and effective schools for our children and teachers, equity in housing, employment, and healthcare for all citizens of District 131 and all of Houston and Harris County, just to name a few. Big challenges, but certainly not insurmountable.
Now when I get to Austin, I’ll concentrate on my “4 R’s”:
1. REFORM – I believe it’s possible to rebuild relationships between law enforcement and the community. And that’s a top priority!
2. RIGHTS – equity and opportunity for all shouldn’t just be catch phrase. I believe in Texas and Texans… Together, we can make it happen!
3. RE-ENTRY – I’ll concentrate on community and business-developed collaboratives to assist the formerly incarcerated, helping provide opportunity, mentorships, and a second chance to those who want a better tomorrow!
4. And, THE ORIGINAL 3-R’s, reading, writing, and arithmetic! That’s right, for me the education of young Texans should always be a top priority and one that deserves our immediate focus!
When I see our community, our city, our state, I don’t see hopelessness, chaos, and irreparable division. I recognize the significant strides we as a country have made in the past 245 years of our existence, but I also recognize that we still have much ground to gain, and with sound vision, planning, collaboration, and persistence we will get there. Together.
Join me on my journey…I need your prayers, your contributions, your support, and most of all your vote to help me get from the SCHOOLHOUSE to the STATEHOUSE! Let’s start today!
Sincerely,
Crystal Dillard
